Statue of Varvara

Varvara Schantin (1870–1941) was an elderly woman from Hamina who sold local bakery products to the officer students of the Reserve Officer School during courses 1-43 in the years 1920-39. A steel sculpture of Varvara has been erected on Kadettikoulukatu near the main building of the Reserve Officer School. The sculpture was made by sculptor Veikko Haukkavaara. The statue project was implemented by the former officer students of Reserve Officer Course 25. The sculpture was unveiled in 1972. “Grandma” Varvara is common heritage of the Reserve Officer School and Hamina.

Varvara Schantin

Varvara Schantin (1870–1941) was a Russian-born native of Hamina, who became an entrepreneur by selling local bakery products to the officer students of the Reserve Officer School.

Hamina Fortress

In Hamina's symmetrical fortress model, the circle was geometrically divided by squares in such a way that an octagonal polygon was created.

There are only two such star-shaped fortresses, inside which there is a town in the shape of a circle, left in Europe: Hamina and Palmanova.
